I remember listening to the extraordinarily dexterous playing of Bruce Thomas, bassist for Elvis Costello's Attractions. His penchant for climbing high up the frets produced spellbinding counter melody. Listen to Accidents Can Happen, off Armed Forces for one of many ideal examples. Anyway, I just made a purchase, a fretless, SX bass in fiery red, that I got off Ebay for a steal of $66.00. It's also a short-scale bass, meaning it's 30" long, a full four inches shorter than traditional basses. This will make playability smoother, faster, and should allow for some kickin' Bruce Thomas-style runs. I can't wait for delivery.
