Like most folks these days, I harbor many completely unsubstantiated predjudices, and, not backed by any reasoned-data, spout off about them at the slightest provocation (while drinking, talking in my sleep, watching PBS documentaries). One of the things I've always 'dissed,' is Windows Vista, which I had never seen, much less used. 'That OS totally blows!' I would say, which made me seem both tech saavy for having condensed 'operating-system' to an acronym, and also for having anything to say about it. When my Dell Mini became virus-ridden for reasons not having anything to do with illegally pirating movies through torrent sites, I sought out a faster, more powerful laptop, with a bigger screen for watching said videos. I learn lessons slowly, and often at expense.
Disregarding the threat of being killed by a sociopathic goofball, I met a guy from Craigslist advertising a 'cosmetically challenged' Inspiron 1525, for an Godfather-like offer. I met him at the local Dunn Brothers, lest he be a knife-weilding psycho. He wore a sweater vest, and worked at a women's clothing store. Amazingly, he mentioned a girlfriend. From the pictures he'd posted, I assumed the kick-ass graphics were from Windows 7, and was shocked (shocked!) to find it was Visa. But, but, but, doesn't that OS suck more than a guy who spews transparant lies about being gay?
I'm now two weeks with it, and, while it comes preloaded with its share of crapware, it's astoundingly better than XP in performance, and moreover, cosmetics. I don't use my laptop to upload files to Mir. I don't scan the heavens for signs of interplanetary funk. I download Led Zepplin albums while pretending to do homework. My interface must look dandy, dammit! As with all other distractions, like the weather channel, cell phones, or being near a window, infinite customization comes at the price of my time, but it's a blast to fiddle-about with my recycle bin's icon, turning it into a gallery-worthy work of art.
